What equipment do I need to start the online flash photography course?

All you need is a DSLR with a standard zoomlens and a flashgun.  Read about the requirements in point 1 and 2.

If you seek more in-depth learning about off-camera lighting techniques, additional equipment will be helpful. Read about the requirements in point 3.

1. DSLR + lens

  • Semi-professional or professional DSLR or a startertskit. Brand and type are irrelevant.
  • A lens with a focal lentgh in the range of 18mm to 200mm, for example 18-55mm, 18-105mm, 24-70mm, 24-200mm or similar.

2. Flashgun

  • A professional or semi-professional flashgun, preferably with an LCD display at the back of the flash.
  • Examples: Canon 600, 580 of 430 EX, Nikon SB 910, 900, 800 of 700, Sony HVL 60 of 43. However, alternative brands such as Yongnuo, Godox, Nissin, Metz can also be used.

3. Additional equipment for off-camera flash (but not necessarily required)

  • Several flashguns, not neccessarily TTL flash with display. Manual flashguns without display can also be used.
  • One or more tripods for your flashgun or camera.
  • Gel filters and light shapers such as an umbrella, snoot etc. (used for refining your photos but are in no way required for taking well-illuminated flash photos).
  • Manual or TTL Triggerset (Tutorials are explained with the use of a triggerset in manual mode, however you can also work manually with a TTL trigger; brand and type are irrelevant).
